“IT TAKES TWO MEN TO MAKE ONE BROTHER”

By Mdubasa | 2018-07-22

Jazzinsoul and Orthodox will once again celebrate their annual birthday on the 28th of July at Ron-Deh-Voo in Mbabane. In what promises to be a memorable event for house heads Eswatini, Beat On Beats caught up with Orthodx who shared his views on the industry and next weekends event.

Briefly introduce yourself.

Orthodox is a deep and soulful house DJ based in Manzini. Born in Mbabane in the late 80’s, stage name Orthodox and real name Mpendulo Magongo, I began my deejaying competition at the tender age of 18. I also started producing, which was inspired by the late DJ Kabzela and Dj Terrence to name a few.

What role do you play in the House Music scene in Eswatini?

For me it’s not about fame but to help the house scene stretch its limits and do what people think is impossible. Music is a happy place, I wanna be one of the people who walks and shows the world that it’s not a waste of time

The Annual Orthodox and Jazz birthday celebration, please tell us more about that initiative?

We were driving from a gig with the brother Jazzinsoul and feeling the love and the experience we had there. Our chat led us to discovering that we were both born on the same month and thought why not share the blessing this month has with the world and celebrate music. The plan is to one day take this into greater heights and turn it to a festival of Jazz and house music.

What are your views on the House Music scene in Eswatini? (Production wise)

Its been a good year for us as Swazis in the production scene with the likes of Slotta, !Sooks, Secret souls and the other brothers showcasing their God given talent internationally. I personally think that this proves that our generation is not all about listening and playing music but contributing to this lovely genre. As for myself I’m thinking of returning to production but that’s if the good lord permit. But all in all we have to be proud of our fellow brothers and support them by all means possible.

What would you love to see change or improve?

Mentallity. I think that word sums it all up, like one of my mentors in life says “let us think outside the box”. As a small country I believe we can do 10 times more than other countries. Dynamite comes in small packages right? Hehe

Who in the local house music industry is making a positive impact?

A huge shout-out to DJ Czar for the hard work and effort in the scene, We see you. Don’t stop

What inspires you to constantly support the house music scene?

I find joy in house music

Where do you see Eswatini’s music industry as a whole in ten years time?

Man can’t even describe it, at this pace we will be on billboard charts by then

Your all time favorite producer?

Louie Vega

Tell us briefly about  your relationship with Jazzinsoul.

One of those kutsi ngikushaye kind of relationships, like those cousins you miss and want gone a week later. We good I think, we bring the best of each other  when we work

What have been your highlights and downfalls since you started the birthday celebration

The love and support people give us is amazing

We all know organising an event is never easy, communication breakdowns and all but all we do is pray and leave it all to the man above

Who do you look up to/grew up supporting locally and internationally

n Locally has to Xtra Luv

n Internationally Manoo

Being a house music DJ what are the challenges you face?

It has to be negative energy from some of the people who don’t understand our sound, but with my positive attitude, I avoid those things.
