A man cut off his lover’s nose with a sharp bush knife after she ended their relationship.
Mxolisi Mamba of Mfabantfu area is alleged to have chopped off Hlonphile Ndzimandze’s nose after she told him that she was terminating their relationship because Mamba had cheated on her and impregnated another woman.
Mamba is said to have not taken the news well as he started by assaulting the complainant with fists and kicks all over the body before hacking her with the bush knife.
After the incident, the accused is alleged to have skipped the country and went to South Africa but his guilt conscious got the better of him and he later came back and surrendered himself to the police.
Mamba appeared for the first time in court at the Matsapha Circuit Court before Magistrate Mthokozisi Dlamini.
He was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The accused pleaded guilty as charged.
Prosecutor Fakazi Mngomezulu informed the court that this was one clear case of gender based violence as the accused assaulted the complainant, without any provocation.
Mngomezulu said the accused proceeded to use a bush knife to hack the complainant, who was not even fighting back.
The prosecutor said the accused permanently injured the complainant as part of her nose was chopped off.
Mngomezulu informed the court that the two were just boyfriend and girlfriend.
The accused, in mitigation, pleaded for leniency and informed the court that he regrets what happened and wished that he be given a chance so that his child that he is expecting with the other woman, does not find him locked up in prison.
The accused informed the court that they had tried to conceive a child with his girlfriend but failed even after consulting traditional healers, which led to him trying out for a child with another woman.
The magistrate told the accused that he was a selfish person because he should have just accepted that the complainant saw that she was failing to give him a child and since he had a child with another woman it was in her (Ndzimandze’s) best interest to leave and move on with her life. The magistrate said the accused acted selfishly by hacking the complainant, leaving her permanently disfigured. Mamba was sentenced to three years imprisonment with a fine option of E6 000.
