SOCCER - BIDVEST Wits coach Gavin Hunt says the race to sign Mbabane Swallows playmaker Banele ‘Pupu’ Sikhondze is not over despite the player reportedly signing a pre-contract with Polokwane City.
Hunt was a spectator at Mavuso Sports Centre yesterday as Sikhondze’s Swallows beat Angolan side Primeiro de Agosto 1-0 in the CAF Champions League. Sikhondze trained with Wits last month and was reportedly close to joining the South African top flight side. However, Polokwane City came from nowhere to take the player under the noses of Wits as reported by the Swazi Observer on Monday. The player, it is understood, has already signed a pre-contract with Polokwane but Hunt is not giving up on landing the most sought after midfielder. “Well, not quite. We’ll see. We’ll see,” Hunt said, after being quizzed on losing out on signing the Swallows playmaker.

The Wits coach added that Sikhondze still had a lot to improve on and praised Swallows’ performance against Agotso.
“He (Sikhondze) is a young player. There are lot things he needs to work on but he is a good player, he has the potential. I thought they (Swallows) played very well. They deserved to win, they were the better side. But it will be tougher going that side (Angola). I thought the whole team (Swallows) was good. It was nice, the interplay was good, and the passing and the movement was good on a bumpy pitch. I thought the two centre backs for Swallows (Mandla Palma and Stanley Umukoro) were very good,” Hunt added.
