DESPITE the many challenges facing the continent, many African countries have made big strides towards institutionalising social security which contributes to reducing poverty, exclusion and improving the lives of millions of people.
This is according to International Social Security Agency (ISSA) Secretary General Hans-Horst Konkolewsky who was speaking on Wednesday at the Swaziland National Provident Fund (SNPF) offices in Manzini during the launch of the ISSA regional office which will be based in Swaziland for the next four years.
“The recent Regional Social security forum for Africa pointed to key priorities for African ISSA member institutions among the 10 global challenges for social security identified by ISSA. There is a need to develop more tailored approaches to different groups, redefine the informal sector and leverage the potential of new technologies,” he said. In another matter, Konkolewsky said the ISSA office will assist in health and long term care as it will look into extending health care coverage, providing quality services and ensuring the sustainability of schemes. He, however, did not hide the fact that achievements in social security protection in Africa are not uniform due to inherent inequalities between countries and regions as well as persisting challenges.

Konkolewsky applauded African countries for having adopted innovative solutions manifested when the world came to South Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In the same event, Thembinkosi Phopho Mnisi was unveiled as ISSA’s newly appointed Liaison Officer.
“The liaison office will serve as an important bridge between the institutions of the region and the ISSA. it will contribute effectively to the reinforcement of the ISSA membership, thus ensuring that ISSA knowledge and services are more accessible and facilitate the recruitment of three new members,” he said.
