BIRDS FACE PRESSURE FROM SPONSORS

By Melusi Mlotsa | 2024-12-29

SOCCER – Capital city giants Mbabane Swallows are under mounting pressure to address internal challenges and secure their sponsors' support.

Reports suggest that the team’s major sponsors have set conditions requiring assurances from the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) to guarantee stability within the club.

The club has been grappling with a power struggle that recently prompted intervention by the PLE. According to sources, the sponsors Eclipse Investment, a leading catering company, and former club president Bishop Bheki Lukhele demanded a signed assurance letter from the PLE affirming that there will be no future disputes.

The conditions have emerged as a critical step for the sponsors to release funds, including overdue salaries for players. Swallows’ players are reportedly owed three months’ wages, with the club currently in financial turmoil.

Mbabane Swallows Public Relations Officer (PRO) Knowledge ‘Bhambo’ Ngwenya confirmed the demands.

“You see, sponsors do not want to be associated with quarrels. In our case, our sponsors informed us to come with an assurance letter from the PLE, confirming that there will be no squabble in the future.

It is not that they are pulling out, but they want that assurance,” he said.

The financial difficulties have led to further unrest within the club. Players recently filed complaints with the Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration Commission (CMAC), citing unpaid wages and concerns over their welfare.

The grievances include allegations of neglect of injured players such as Given Lukhele and Sizolwethu ‘Nunu’ Shabalala. There were also allegations of poor living conditions in the club’s housing facilities.

These issues have worsened tensions, adding urgency to the need for resolutions within the team’s management.

Despite these challenges, Mbabane Swallows are set to host the army side, Young Buffaloes next weekend. The match is expected to be a crucial test for the red and white glamour side as they seek to refocus on their on-field performances amid the off-field turmoil.

The assurance letter from the PLE will be pivotal in retaining the sponsors' support. Failure to meet the conditions could further jeopardise the club’s financial stability and performance.
