SOCCER - SANITY prevails!
Following the dispute involving the outgoing Mbabane Swallows Management Committee and Princess Lungile, the MTN Premier League match between Swallows and Royal Leopard has been called-off.
The match was to be played at Mavuso Sports Centre tomorrow. The cancellation of the match was decided in a meeting between the Premier League of Eswatini Executive Committee and Swallows representatives, where the outgoing MC, which has handed over the team to Princess Lungile, was represented by Swallows Legal Advisor Welile Mabuza.
Princess Lungile was represented by Bongani Dlamini at Sigwaca House yesterday. The meeting, which lasted almost four hours, was not a fruitful one as both parties distanced themselves from the team after Princess Lungile's representatives maintained that they were not taking over the team with its current debts.
Addressing the media after the meeting, PLE acting CEO Pat Vilakati said they saw it fit to call both parties to hear their sides, saying both parties stated clearly that they were not ready to take over the running of the club.
"With that confusion, we have adjourned the meeting until Monday at 11am, where both parties are expected to bring a way forward on the future of the team and how they will ensure it returns to action.
“We have taken a decision to call-off the match as both parties are not taking responsibility for the team," he said. Asked if their decision wouldn't be a bad precedent as other clubs that may decide to come to the PLE and ask for cancellation of their matches due to management issues, Vilakati said the decision to cancel the games was based on the PLE's image and all stakeholders involved.
"It wouldn't have been proper to see fans paying to watch a match that will not happen. This would put the fans at risk due to violence that could occur, hence our decision to call off the match.
Highlanders have faced a similar issue, but what was different with Highlanders was that there were people who stepped up to take charge of the team," he said.
After the purported official handover of the club by the MC, led by acting President Absalom Ngwenya to Princess Lungile, it has now come to light that the leadership under the latter has declined the offer to accept the team.
This has left the club in a precarious position, devoid of directorship, as both parties have submitted formal letters; the outgoing committee signaling their departure, while Princess Lungile, through her legal representatives, refused to take on the responsibilities.
During a press conference held at Thokoza Conference and Church Centre, four days ago, Ngwenya asserted that they had officially handed over the club to Princess Lungile, who has allegedly revealed that she was not part of the drama, that resembles a short but horror movie scene in a community TV station.
