Madlenya………………… (1)3
Royal Leopard……………. (1)2
Soccer - Jozi Gobana Ku Madlenya!
Elite league rookies Madlenya pulled off another major upset when they defeated defending champions Royal Leopard 3-2 yesterday at Ka Langa Stadium.
The new kids on the block opened the scoring sheet as early as the fifth minute through their talisman Njabulo Maziya's header following a cross from Sebenele Gamedze.
The Siphofaneni-based outfit had another chance in the 18th minute to double the lead when Sethu Ngcamphalala fluffed an opportunity from close range.
Royal Leopard came back into the match as it progressed after the threat posed by the new comers, but had to wait until the 35th minutes when Bongani Dlamini found the equaliser.
The half time interval arrived with the teams on level terms. Madlenya made a change in their goalkeeping after the restart, when they introduced Dumsani Dlamini for the injured Mndeni Lukhele.
The police side made the most of their possession as they pushed for another goal.
However, it was William 'Masondeza' Gamedzes youthful battalion who went ahead in the 72nd minute through Sethu Ngcamphalala's goal.
As the match entered the final phase, Madlenya goalkeeper Dumsani Dlamini pulled off two saves. Winger Sethu Ngcamphalala completed his brace after 88 minutes of play. It was a case of too little too late when Thembisa Shabangu scored the second goal for his side during the referee's added time.
Madlenya’s win would have evoked the memories of their 2018/19 victory against the same side when they knocked them out of the Ingwenyama Cup at Mayaluka Stadium courtesy of Melusi 'Vardy' Thwala's goal.
