SOCCER - MBABANE Highlanders boss Chief Ally Kgomongwe has demonstrated his kind gesture after he cancelled Manzini Wanderers’ E75 000 debt.
This was a loan offered by the Pretoria-based businessman to the hub giants in August to pay players’ salaries.
In an interview with this publication, Kgomongwe said he was not desperate for Wanderers to pay back the loan as he was just offering a helping hand to the Weslians. "I don't care about that money.
It was from a willing heart as I decided to help the team during their time of need. One thing I like about Wanderers is that they acknowledged that I helped them.
They respect me a lot and I also do the same.
They even sent me a letter of appreciation.
That was a sign of ubuntu," he said. The Highlanders boss said football was all about developing friendship and not enemies. "Rivalry must end inside the field of play. After 90 minutes we are all friends. This is how I take football.
I did not help Wanderers as a way of demonstrating that I have money, but I was just offering a helping hand. Who knows, they (Wanderers) might help us with money in future.
Fine this was a loan to the team but I do not expect them to pay back the money," he said. Kgomongwe said teams were struggling because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Financial Burden
“It’s an open secret that the coronavirus is hitting hard on the teams because even fans are not allowed to watch games.
I hope cancelling the loan will make their financial burden lighter as we are all struggling under COVID-19.” He then urged all the players in the country to keep safe and follow all precautionary measures.
“The situation does not allow for us to continue playing and we have to respect the country’s authorities and adhere to COVID-10 protocols.”
Manzini Wanderers Council of Elders Chairman Joe Nkumane said this was a matter between the two parties. “We will meet with Mr Kgomongwe first before making any comment on the matter," he said.
Meanwhile, the Bible Society Cup reigning champions are still mourning the death of their director Thembumenzi Mkhatjwa, who passed away after a short illness while undergoing treatment in one of the government hospitals on Tuesday night.
