Ngwenya Town Board revenue hiked to E11 781 283 during the 2019/2020 financial year.
This was a great improvement from E6 500 799 recorded during the same reporting period (2018/19).
Detailing the town’s operating revenue, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Phumzile Tshabalala said E7 424 666 was collected from government property rates- an equivalent of 63 per cent of the total revenue. Rates from privately owned property amounted to E3 676 751, which accounted for 31 per cent of total revenue.
It was pointed out that Ngwenya Town Board was gradually reducing over reliance on dependence on government for its entire operations.
Making her remarks during the fast developing town’s annual general meeting convened at the town hall on Tuesday, Tshabalala noted the decline in government rates during the financial year 2019/20.
Tshabalala said government rates reduced from 67 per cent to 63 per cent. She said the decline of government rates is a step towards the right direction for the town board as it has been its desire to reduce its dependence on government.
Tshabalala mentioned that there had been an increase on private rates. Private rates increased from 21 to 31 per cent.
The town board only received E500 400 subvention from government, which accounts for four per cent of the total revenue.
Further highlighting more successes when compared to the previous financial year, Tshabalala mentioned that Ngwenya successfully formulated its Five Year Integrated Development Plan Strategy, a document that guides the Ngwenya Town’s development for the next five years, beginning from April 2020 to March 2025.
“A thorough stakeholder consultation process was followed when formulating this document, and we want to believe that the strategies and objectives contained in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) are indeed the aspirations of the Ngwenya community, and if well achieved and implemented will lead to the kind of development aspired by the community,” she said.
The CEO said the town board was able to achieve several projects under the Office of the Town Clerk, the Engineering Department, the Town Treasury and the Social and Community Development Department (AMICAALL).
Moreover, Magongo Tshabalala said Ngwenya Urban Area in general has shown a great potential for development, as they had seen the sale of more than 90 per cent of properties at Mabuya Township most of which have already been developed, with some being developed currently.
“During the financial year, we supported and guided the Mchalageni Development Company towards achieving the establishment of the Sibonelo Township,” she said.
This township has about 431 plots, 65 of which are commercial and the rest are residential.
She proudly announced that one of the commercial properties will have the long awaited first of its kind shopping complex. On the other hand, it was explained that government had been requested to approve formalisation of Nkhungu Township.
It was added that the board made great strides towards acquiring land for the provision of a community cemetery.
