ACTORS in the country have mentioned that not being able to leave Eswatini is their biggest dilemma.
With the lack of opportunities in the acting sector in the kingdom, actors are worse off as the lockdown has forced those with gigs outside the country to stay here at home.
Local actors have shared that they have suffered and how the lockdown has worsened the matters.
Actor Thembinkosi Mthethwa stated that the lockdown has affected his career he has had to cancel a number of gigs planned for the year. Actress and model Snowee said she was looking forward to many international gigs as there was not much to do in the kingdom.
“I was looking forward to growing in the industry but the pandemic has us on lockdown and we cannot move to South Africa and be with our respective agencies.
Achieved
I think there is still a big room for improvement in acting in the kingdom and if it was not for this pandemic, a lot of positive change would have been achieved,” she said.
She mentioned that to help enhance the TV and film industry in the kingdom government should introduce acting in schools and workshops as well as agencies.
Actor Staring said acting in the kingdom lacked in the past but drastic improvement had been made before the lockdown.
“prior to Covid-19, we were seeing so much improvement in the acting world.
Demands
The improved professionalism in cinematography and visual quality is proof enough that we are growing.
The pandemic has affected us as actors, ways especially skills wise as our career demands us to constantly be practicing and being exposed to different platforms,” he said. Nqaba Tsela mentioned that he felt as though acting in the kingdom was still slacking behind. He said although there were improvements, they only allowed for a few people.
“One of the biggest things that government must start doing is endorsing art, giving out acting scholarships and programmes that will enable individuals to pursue acting in higher learning institutions. It is said that "an actor prepares" this preparation comes in different forms, without proper training and guidance talent will just be talent with no ‘X-factor’,” he said.
He added that a lot of world known actors visit these institutions and constantly engage in workshops to horn their craft.
“If the government can kindly look at supporting this initiative then we can go far because actors are also the backbone of the economy, now it is even better because we have the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, where students study filming and production, but with all their skills who will act for them if there are no scholarships or bursaries for those who want to pursue acting,” he said.
