By Sibusiso Masilela | 2020-06-01

SOCCER - MBABANE Highlanders are reportedly chasing after the signature of former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thuso Phala.

The Limpopo-born player is said to be one of the targets for the capital city giants, as the club’s Director Ally Kgomongwe looks to strengthen the current squad for next season.  A source close to the matter revealed that Phala could secure a move to the country next season.  “He is one of the players, who might join Highlanders after the Director Ally Kgomongwe asked top South African consultants to scout experienced players for the team.

“Phala is currently clubless and he is keen on making a move somewhere later this year when things get back to normal,” the source said.

When reached, Kgomongwe said he had tasked several football consultants to scout for players for the team next season.

“We asked several football coaches from South Africa to look for players to join the team next season, but I am not yet in a position to reveal any name.

We want to assemble a strong and competitive team that will go to Africa next season,” he said.

The speedy winger recently parted ways with basement ABSA Premiership side Black Leopards about three months ago.

He could join the list of former Premier Soccer League stars, who have played for Highlanders during the era of Kgomongwe after the likes Punch Masenemela and Joseph Lekata, among others On another note, Highlanders players received 50 per cent of their salaries in May.

Highlanders Managing Director Kgomongwe could only confirm that their players had been paid their monthly salaries for May when reached.

“We have paid all our players for May, including the school going players whom we are committed in ensuring that they become good and responsible future citizens of society. We want to continue improving the lives and the welfare of our players,” he said.

One of the school-going Highlanders players Melusi Magagula thanked the South African businessman for improving their welfare. “We are very thankful and grateful to our director for the love he is showing to us as players. We have been receiving our salaries on time ever since he joined the team. He is also paying for our school fees.”
