The Small Enterprise and Development Company (SEDCO) in partnership with MTN have launched a competition that will see five entrepreneurs win a share of E50 000.
The competition will be run through their radio programme, Cija Ngebhizinisi. The programme is aimed at providing basic entrepreneurship training to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
SEDCO CEO Dorrington Matiwane said five businesses would be awarded a sum of E10 000 each to invest in their respective business. He stated that the competition was meant to help them see the impact of the radio programme.
“The competition will require MSMEs that have been following the programme to submit applications and their businesses will be judged based on how they implement the key aspects of business management emphasised during the training. After the adjudication process, the five winning MSMEs will be awarded cash prizes to invest in their business,” he said.
Explaining the objective of the programme, the CEO noted that most MSMEs in Eswatini were sole traders hence it was difficult for them to leave their works stations to attend training as this resulted in loss of revenue since business management training courses were largely held over a period of five to days. “This duration of time away from ones business is unfavourable for most MSMEs hence radio is considered as an effective means to convey the message to the target group. “The idea is also to bring together SMEs to compete for prize money to help them boost their business ventures as this will improve the capacity of MSMEs in running their business and reach a wide audience of (MSMEs) in the country,” he said. The radio programme is funded by MTN Foundation and is aired every Friday from 19:30 to 8pm by the Eswatini Broadcasting Information Services (EBIS).
He added that each entrant would have to give the five buzzwords (Bogcamile Beliviki) that were announced over the past 18 weeks during the programme.
The deadline for applications is Friday and application forms can be downloaded on www.sedco.biz, link on Facebook: SEDCO Small Enterprises Development Company.
The programme started in September 2019 with a live broadcast about SEDCO, MTN and introduction of the programme on what it was all about and how it would benefit SMEs and the competition as well .
The programme has been running for the past three months and has covered, amongst other topics, business awareness, business idea generation, risk management, business planning and marketing.
