SOCCER – NEW Mbabane Swallows player and former Pigg’s Peak Black Swallows striker Allen Mabuza believes his disallowed goal against Manzini Sundowns was legitimate.
The Sihlangu striker was speaking after their 1-1 draw against Manzini Sundowns during an MTN Premier League match played at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday.
“That was a clear goal and I don’t want to talk much about that,” Mabuza said.
Asked about the team’s performance on the day, the former Moneni Pirates player said lack of communication was a major contributor to the draw, stating that he would put more effort in the next game.
Meanwhile, Eswatini Referees Association Competitions Committee member Thulani Mavuso said the referee and his assistants felt it was not a goal.
“Referees are human and they can make mistakes just like any other person. This is due to the fact that they have to make decisions within a short space of time. We are also in a tight situation in as far as this issue is concerned because we don’t have a Video Assistant Referee or video footage to analyse the goal,” he said.
When asked whether he believes that the infamous VAR be introduced to local football, Mavuso replied to the affirmative.
He, however, said the equipment was expensive and the Eswatini Football Association cannot afford it for now. “VAR is a good tool to correct mistakes committed by referees. However, as an association we can’t afford it now. In fact, even countries like South Africa do not have such a necessary tool.
“Let me not comment about the goal because it is now water under the bridge,” he said.
