It was business as usual at Ngwenya Border Post yesterday.
There was a poor turn-out for the protest by COSATU members as less than 50 were at the border and it didn’t have any obvious effect. They sang political songs for about two hours before dispersing.
Trucks were seen moving in and out of the Oshoek without any disturbances, businesses around and next to the border were operating with ease.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Mpumalanga had planned to stage the protests yesterday and block Ngwenya, Mahamba and Matsamo border posts in solidarity with the ‘mother of all strikes’.
COSATU spokesperson Sizwe Pamla said the border blockades would be convened in solidarity with the country’s public sector associations who are currently fighting for a cost of living adjustment (CoLA).
“Mpumalanga COSATU supports the strike by Eswatini's National Public Services & Allied Workers Union (NAPSAWU) and other Public Sector Associations (PSAs) of Eswatini and holds a strong view that their demand for a living wage is a genuine one which must be acceded to by the government of Eswatini. Eswatini will be leading border protests alongside its national affiliate NEHAWU," said Pamla.
Schools
Schools visited around Mbabane were also in order regardless of the national strike organised by civil servants.
These were St. Mark’s Primary, Mbabane Central, SOS Primary, SAGM Primary and Msunduza Infant Primary Schools. High schools visited were Ka-Boyce High School, John Wesley Methodist High School and MDS High Schools.
